Commenting on the progress made, Leendert den Hollander, Chief Executive of Youngs Seafood Limited, said: Everyone wants to know that the fish on their plate has been sourced responsibly, and that food hasnt gone to waste, and thats why we welcome the step forward taken to tackle the issue of discards. Fish is such an important source of protein and it is crucial that discarding fish at sea is tackled in a way that is sustainable for the long-term. We believe that success is about doing the right thing now, and for generations to come, so momentum must be kept up on this issue as the details are worked through.
Mike Mitchell, Technical and CSR Director for Youngs Seafood Limited, added: This meeting was a step on a long path, clearly there will be a lot more work ahead to tackle this issue, and there will be big decisions to make further down the line. Having campaigned on this issue for a number of years, as part of our Fish for Life programme, we see that well managed eco-systems are critical to ensuring we have bountiful sources of fish, healthy people and healthy societies. The causes of discarding are multi-factorial, and there is no silver bullet solution, but we have been given a positive direction of travel from the EU. We now encourage national governments and fishery managers to press ahead and seek pragmatic solutions to eliminate discarding as a matter of urgency.

UK - Youngs Seafood Limited has welcomed the step forward made, on measures to tackle discards, at the EU meeting of Fisheries Ministers this week (12 June 2012). At the meeting, Ministers reviewed key aspects of proposed reforms on discards.
