Think Tank On Salmon Farm Solutions

CANADA - Scientists have met with representatives from federal and provincial governments and the aquaculture industry to find ways to reduce conflicts between marine mammals and fish farms.

The meeting, organised by the Creative Salmon Company Ltd., took place at the Tin Wis, Tofino .

“It’s a think tank. At the end of the day, we’re hoping to come up with a system that Creative Salmon can adopt that can protect our fish and our marine mammals,” said Spencer Evans, general manager of Creative Salmon.

Attending the meeting were representatives from the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, University of British Columbia, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Mulder Marine, Cards Aquaculture Ltd., Marine Harvest Canada, Sable Fish Canada, the British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association and Bishop Aquatic.

Participants discussed predator, grower and shark-guard net options, non-lethal deterrents, historical numbers and population dynamics.
