The definitive guide to Mycotoxins in Aquaculture

Rui Gonçalves and Michele Muccio have officially launched Mycotoxins in Aquaculture, a new book which brings together the authors’ experience from work with terrestrial animals to identify the potential impact of these antinutrients in aquatic species.

Mycotoxins in Aquaculture is the aquaculture-specific book published by Biomin and brings the same level of awareness of the effects of mycotoxins in aquatic species as there currently is in terrestrial animals.

Mycotoxins are fungi-produced toxins that are increasingly becoming a potential threat to producers, however, their role in aquaculture feeds has still to be fully elucidated. With the current trend for the replacement of the fishmeal content of aquaculture feeds, the issue of antinutrients contained in plant-based materials is of growing concern in aquaculture production. The interest of the scientific community towards these toxic metabolites is increasing, with a large number of recently published studies.

Author Rui A Gonçalves, aquaculture innovation manager at Lucta SA, explains why Mycotoxins in Aquaculture is such an important book: "The aquaculture sector must increasingly address the threat of mycotoxins in order to successfully manage fishmeal replacement, sustainability, disease challenges and a host of other issues. Scientific studies show that the level of mycotoxin contamination detected in finished aquafeeds pose a risk for several important aquatic species. Producers need to be more aware of how mycotoxins can affect their businesses.”

As well as giving a basic introduction to mycotoxins in aquaculture the book also covers potential implications of the presence of mycotoxins, with chapters on aquatic species defense mechanisms, the analysis of mycotoxin content in commodities and feeds and how to fight mycotoxins. It also offers lots of practical examples making it an extremely useful guide for producers.

Author Michele Muccio, product manager mycotoxins at Biomin, explains why he and Rui decided to write it: “We wrote this book to be of use to everyone in the aquaculture sector, including nutritionists, veterinarians, quality control, consultants, aquafeed millers, academics and students.
