A recommendation was adopted to enable the member states of SIOFA to ban gillnets in the Indian Ocean.
It was also agreed that the headquarters of SIOFA will be installed in La Reunion; however the annual meeting will be held in Mauritius every second year.
The EU delegation presented a Monitoring and Control Surveillance (MCS) system including issues of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, which has been well received by the contracting Parties as a starting point for future discussions.
The present Members of the SIOFA are Australia, Cook Islands, the EU, France, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mauritius and Seychelles.
