Issues raised included the severe economic pressures currently being endured by the Scottish fleet and the ongoing dispute with Iceland and the Faroes due to their over-fishing of the north-east Atlantic mackerel stock,

"Mr Paterson is notable for when as a shadow minister in 2005 he wrote a highly critical paper on the numerous defects of the Common Fisheries Policy, which contained many recommendations that today are widely recognised as perceived wisdom, including the promotion of selective fishing gears and real time area closures to protect spawning and juvenile stocks."
