Economics +1 more

CHILE - SalmonChile has predicted that five thousand direct employees may lose their jobs.

SalmonChile has said that between March and June 2010, up to 25 per cent of the salmon industry may lose their jobs. Economia y Negocios reports that these five thousand employees would join the ten thousand who became unemployed last year due to the ISA virus.

General manager for SalmonChile, Carlos Odebret said however that two thousand temporary jobs may be created.

At its peak the industry employed over 50 thousand people through direct or indirect employment.

The new layoffs are anticipated due to the fact that in coming months there will be no raw material for processing.

It is hoped that later on in the year productivity will begin to increase. New framework regarding the production and harvesting of salmon is expected to come into place in coming months and it is hoped that this will boost production.

However currently there is debate over labour unions.
