SalmonAID Hosts Salmon Month

Salmonids

US - A full education programme is being run during Salmon Month throughout September at San Francisco's Aquarium of the Bay.

SalmonAID, a west coast-wide coalition of conservation organizations, fishing groups, sustainable seafood advocates, slow food chefs and first nations tribes, have joined together to raise awareness of the plight of salmon populations, the rivers and streams they spawn in, and the many communities that rely on salmon for their livelihoods and survival.

The month includes talks from fishermen and films about rivers and salmon as well as other entertainmment.

The aquarium says the programmes will emphasise the importance of ensuring the long-term vitality of wild salmon populations, at least in part by eating wild salmon and avoiding what it describes as "ecologically unsound" farmed salmon.
