Norwegian Salmon Exports Grow

NORWAY - Figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC) show that exports of Norwegian salmon reached NOK 23.7 billion last year.

The increase in 2009 was NOK 5.8 billion for atlantic salmon and NOK 120 million for trout.

Total exports of trout reached NOK 1.9 billion in 2009.

"Despite the financial crisis and increasing unemployment in some of our most important markets, the demand for Norwegian salmon is increasing," said analyst Paul Aandahl at NSEC.

Average export price for salmon has risen to NOK 32.72 per kilo - NOK 3.77 higher than in 2008. The export volume also rose by 56,831 tonnes. with filets showing the highest rise.

France, which took NOK 3.9 billion worth of salmon is the largest single market for Norwegian salmon although the US market is growing fast showing an increase of 306 per cent last year compared to 2008.
