CANADA - Norwegian fish farming companies operating in Canadian waters off British Columbia forecaste that production levels will remain level in 2011 despite the change in the regulatory regime.

Authority for fisheries is being taken over by teh federal government from the provincial governemnt of British Columbia and according to the report many salmon farmers see this as an opportunity to grow their businesses.

The major companies in teh region are Marine Harvest, Mainstream (Cermaq) amd Grieg Seafood.

In its quarterly report in September last year, Marine Harvest forecast average production of farmed salmon in North America for the year to reac 121,000 tonnes - up three per cent from the 117,000 tonnes produced in 2009.

For 2011, Marine Harvest forecasts an average production of 124,000 tonnes - an increase of about two per cent on 2010.
