The US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have announced that the Atlantic bluefin tuna currently do not warrant for species protection under the Endangered Species Act.
NOAA commented that its scientific review found that the western Atlantic, eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean stocks of bluefin tuna were a species of concern but not endangered.
NOAA have promised to revisit the decision in early 2013 when more information on the effects of the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill will be available. The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, the international body charged with the fish’s management and conservation, will also have released its new stock assessment.
