SCOTLAND, UK - The implementation of the Inshore Fishing (Prohibition of Fishing for Cockles)(Western Isles)(Scotland) Order which came into effect yesterday (25 January) has been welcomed by Scottish National Party MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Angus MacNeil.

The Scottish Government have now legislated for a statutory minimum size of 30mm for cockles, which may be lifted from the foreshore of the Western Isles.

Mr MacNeil said: “In October, I was contacted by cockle fishermen who were powerless in stopping transient workers who were wiping out the cockle fishing.

“Having made representations with Richard Lochhead, I am pleased that the Scottish Government has now implemented this Statutory Instrument. I hope this goes some way to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the cockle industry.”
