Mexican Government Intensifies Tilapia Production

09 December 2013, at 12:00am

MEXICO - In order to boost the production of tilapia and increase profitability, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), will intensify the cultivation of young tilapia in Hidalgo state.

With this new process, which is applied for the first time in the state, initial production should reach over 3.4 million fry in the first five months of next year.

In the first stage of this project, the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) and Shared Risk Trust will obtain 400,000 good quality fingerlings.

Subsequently, the growth of the organisms will be monitored until they reach sexual maturity, over a period of seven months.

Brood fish will be identified with a microchip that will integrate a record of quality, reproductive performance and growth, by capturing information on weight, length and number of eggs shed per gram, among other data.
