AUSTRALIA - Tassal Salmon Australia, a Tasmanian product has been praised for opening the new Tassal Salmon Shop in Melbourne, for it being another icon of Tasmanian innovation and sustainability.

“Tasmania is on the cusp of a new economic direction that all Tasmanians can support and be proud of,” Mr Bartlett, a local MP said.

“This new shop does much more than simply promote and sell Tasmanian salmon. It promotes Tasmania as a leader in high-quality produce, and the perfect place to grow those salmon,” Mr Bartlett said.

“I recently inspected Tassal’s new hatchery at Ranelagh, south of Hobart. That water-saving initiative is another example of the company’s excellent sustainable credentials.

“The Kew Salmon Shop is a unique concept that not only sells Tassal salmon and cooking products, but features information about Tasmanian salmon, from hatchery to plate,” Mr Bartlett said.

The Kew shop also has a virtual salmon pond and touch screens, a presentation kitchen where visitors can watch chefs preparing salmon, and a café that serves breakfast and lunch.

The kitchen will also host guest chefs, and regular hands-on cooking sessions – from beginner to advanced.

“If you want to buy Tasmanian salmon, or learn how to bake it, fry it, steam it, barbeque it, smoke it, store it, prepare it, eat it, find out where it comes from and why it is so good for you, it’s all on offer at the Salmon Shop in Kew,” Mr Bartlett said.

Last year, the Tasmanian salmon industry harvested 30,000 tonnes of Atlantic salmon, with a farm-gate value of $330-million.

Tassal already operates a high-profile retail outlet at Salamanca Square in Hobart.
