Malaysian govt planning pilot project on freshwater fish breeding

KUALA LUMPUR - The Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry will implement a pilot project on freshwater fish breeding in Pahang, which takes after the Felda scheme concept.

Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said 200ha of land in Pekan would be used for the project and they hope to launch the project this year.

He said the concept was one of the many projects under the newly launched National High Impact Aquaculture Industry Zone (ZIA) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Terengganu recently.

Muhyiddin said if the project was successful the concept would be expanded to other areas designated for ZIA nationwide.

He however said that the government has yet to decide on the number of people that would be involved in the project.

"We are still finalising on the anchor company to undertake the task of managing the overall project in Pekan.
