Malaysia: Easy to breed freshwater fish in Pahang

KUANTAN - Pahang has all the natural elements in its rivers and lakes to make it the countrys leading freshwater fish producer.

Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (Fama) chairman Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the agency would provide all the necessary to help entrepreneurs in the state to build their businesses in rearing freshwater fish.

“Not only the state has the right natural features to breed freshwater fish, it is also a venture that has lucrative potentials.

“You can see this from the many farming activities along Sungai Pahang involving hundreds of breeders,” he told re-porters after the official opening of a freshwater fish promotional campaign at Fama agriculture market here recently.

He added that freshwater fish industry in the state raked in between RM3mil and RM5mil annually and some of the produce were exported to Batam, Indone-sia.

Abdul Rahim said other than Sungai Pahang, freshwater fish farming activities were also being carried out at Tasik Bera, Tasik Chini and at Empangan Jaleh.

The commercial potential was big and one did not need a huge capital to start a business in freshwater fish as compared to seawater fish, he added.

“For freshwater fish, all you need is a river or freshwater lakes, cages and quality food for the fish,” Abdul Rahim said.
