Keep an eye on Chile, East Coast salmon farmers warned

CANADA - A New Brunswick salmon farmer is warning that Chile has become a force to be reckoned with in aquaculture and that Canada's East Coast industry needs to find new ways to compete.

Nell Halse, of Cooke Aquaculture, was part of a delegation that recently travelled to South America, where she said they found an impressive operation that the Chilean government plans to expand.

"They have seen phenomenal improvements in some of their coastal communities, especially in the outlying areas," Halse said. "The area that we saw, they think nothing of a fish farm that has a million fish.

"And for us here in New Brunswick, a farm of half-a-million fish is considered a large farm."
