The UK Fishing Industry in 2010: Landings report available on the MMO website provides a comprehensive overview of the quantity and value of species landed by UK and foreign vessels into the UK and by UK vessels landing abroad in 2010.
The statistics reveal that during 2010 the UK fleet landed 606,000 tonnes of sea fish (including shellfish) into the UK and abroad with a value of 719 million. Compared with 2009, this represents a four per cent increase in quantity and a seven per cent increase in value.
The statistics are being released in advance of the compendium publication UK Sea Fisheries Statistics 2010 in late September in a drive to provide data to the public as soon as they are available. A separate report on the structure and activity of the UK fleet was published in June.
In 2010:
- 68 per cent of the quantity and 76 per cent of the value of landings by the UK fleet were made into the UK.
- Landings by foreign vessels formed 21 per cent of total landings into the UK.
- Scottish vessels accounted for 61 per cent of the weight of landings by UK vessels, while English vessels accounted for 30 per cent. Peterhead remains the port with highest landings, up nine per cent from 2009 levels to 122,000 tonnes.
- Landings of cod by the UK fleet increased by 14 per cent on 2009 levels to 26,000 tonnes. Overall, the UK fleet landed 169,000 tonnes of demersal species, five per cent higher than in 2009.
- Over a quarter of all fish landed by UK vessels was mackerel. In total, 286,000 tonnes of pelagic species were landed by the UK fleet, virtually unchanged from 2009, while the value decreased by six per cent to 179 million.
- Scallops landings by the UK fleet were 20,000 tonnes higher than in 2006, an 80 per cent increase. Total shellfish landings by UK vessels rose to 152,000 tonnes, an increase of 13 per cent on 2009 levels.
- 99 per cent of the pelagic fish and 96 per cent of the demersal fish landed by the UK fleet were caught by vessels in a producer organisation. Almost half of all shellfish were landed by vessels in the non-sector and the 10 metres and under pool.
