SCOTLAND - Wildlife and conservation groups in Scotland have attacked plans for off shore salmon farms near the Western Isles.

According to a report in the Times, Friends of the Earth Scotland have criticised the plans by Marine Harvest as being unsustainable.

Duncan McLaren, chief executive of Friends of the Earth Scotland is reported saying that moving farms offshore as a means of reducing pollution moves the problem further out at a time when the seas are under threat from climate change.

The Scottish Royal Society for the Protection of Birds also questions the sustainability in the report.
