Crayfish require special management protection due to the threat they face from crayfish plague, which is fatal to European freshwater crayfish.

The risk of the spread of crayfish plague increases during the fishing season so it is essential that the individual crayfish fisherman take responsibility for disinfection of equipment to prevent the spread of infection, and follow current advice and instructions.

Read the information leaflet published by the Directorate for Nature Management (current Environment Agency) and the FSA. Here, the authorities give example information on how individuals can prevent the spread of crayfish plague,

Because of crayfish plague, fishing has been prohibited in the following areas:

  • Halden watercourse downstream Winton locks
  • Glomma downstream Braskereidfoss
  • Store Le
  • Buåa
