Aquaculture for all

Cooke bid puts N.L. aquaculture on new level: industry group

CANADA - A massive salmon project planned for southern Newfoundland will make the province Canada's leader in fish farming, a regional aquaculture group says.

Cooke Aquaculture announced Friday it will develop a $155-million salmon aquaculture business along the south coast. The New Brunswick-based company already runs a small operation in Belleoram.

Cyr Couturier, executive director of the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association, said the province is finally coming into its own after two decades of experimenting with fish farming.

"Currently, we have the fastest growing aquaculture jurisdiction in the country," Couturier said.

"We have also the second-largest production of mussels in the country, of all the provinces, and we will have … the second-largest production of salmon within a few years. So, it's all positive."
