Congressman calls for clear labeling in restaurants

US - A Mississippi lawmaker wants restaurants to identify the country of origin for catfish on restaurant menus.

He also wants to shift oversight of the US catfish industry to the USDA.

"People think of catfish as American fish and naturally assume that is what they receive when they order it from menus,” said Second District Rep. Bennie G. Thompson in a statement.

“It is an outrage that Americans who legitimately order catfish or farm-raised catfish in restaurants are unknowingly eating imported catfish."

The Commerce Department regulates the US catfish industry. Mr Thompson has also called for enhanced inspections on domestic and imported species.
