Catfish Processing Down 17 Percent from Last Year US - Farm-raised catfish processed during June 2006 totaled 41.2 million pounds round weight, down 17 percent from June 2005.
The average price paid to producers was 80.7 cents per pound for June 2006, up 1.1 cents
from last month and 8.6 cents above a year ago.
Net pounds of processed fish sold during June 2006 totaled 21.7 million pounds, down 14 percent from the comparable month in 2005. Total end of the month inventory increased 1 percent from last month but was down 42 percent from a year ago. Sales of fresh fish, at 7.72 million pounds, were down 13 percent from June 2005 and represented 35 percent of total sales. Frozen fish sales, at 14.0 million pounds, were down 14 percent from a year ago and accounted for the remaining 65 percent of total fish sales. Sales of whole fish represented 15 percent of the total fish sold, fillets accounted for 62 percent, and the remaining 23 percent were mostly steaks, nuggets, and value added products.
The June 2006 average price received by processors for total fresh fish was $2.56 per pound, an increase of 24 cents from last year. Prices for fresh whole fish were $1.74 per pound, up 16 cents from last year. Prices for fresh fillets were up 29 cents at $3.14 per pound. Total frozen fish averaged $2.54 per pound, up 27 cents from June 2005. Prices for frozen whole fish were up 18 cents at $2.19 and frozen fillets at $2.98 per pound were up 30 cents from a year ago.
Freshwater imports of frozen, boneless, Ictalurus, Pangasius and Siluriformes catfish fillets for May 2006 totaled 3.31 million pounds, up 23 percent from the amount imported last year. Forty-two percent of all imports were from Vietnam, 29 percent from Thailand, with the remainder coming from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Spain. The Ictalurus (channel catfish) imports totaled 356 thousand pounds. Exports of frozen, boneless catfish fillets reported for May 2006 totaled 19.0 thousand pounds, which went to Canada and Italy. Fresh fillet exports totaled 58.3 thousand pounds, with 47.9 thousand pounds going to Canada and the rest to the Netherlands and Nigeria.
