According to the Daily Times the Karachi university Faculty of Science Dean Prof. Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi said there was a need to boost the contribution of the sector towards the GDP.
The one day seminar, 'Shrimp Farming Prospects in Pakistan' staged by the University of Karachi and backed by the Marine Reference Collection & Resource Center (MRCRC) and the Pakistan Fisheries Research Institute (PFRI)heard presentations from Dr Hani Baig of the PFRI, Dr Juancho Van Lavilla, a shrimp hatchery expert and Dr Claro L. Melicano, a physiologist and algae production expert from the Philippines.
He said the country needs to learn from the mistakes of countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, whic he said were losing billions of dollars because of contamination of fish and shrimps.
And he added that it was essential to maintain high sanitary conditions with state of the art microbiological and toxicological evaluation facilities.
Dr Baig gave an overview of the potential of shrimp aquaculture in Sindh, discussing various requirements, benefits and problems associated with shrimp farming. Dr Lavilla also gave a detailed presentation of the management of shrimp hatcheries, which are specially designed to assist in breeding and larval and post-larval rearing, the Daily Times reports.

PAKISTAN - A conference at the University of Karachi in Pakistan has called for greater promotion for fisheries and shrimp aquaculture to increase the industry's contribution to the country's GDP.
