He underscored the importance of the introduction and implementation of the Code of Conduct as per internationally recognized norms and standards to ensure the quality and safety of Bangladesh shrimp products, reports NewsHour.
He reiterated the commitment of the Government to extend all assistance to the shrimp industry in Bangladesh which is contributing significantly to the national economy in terms of its contribution to GDP, employment generation and country’s export earnings.
The Code of Conduct for Bangladesh shrimp industry was formulated by the Department of Fisheries and the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation in 2011 and again updated by them in conformity with the newly enacted US Food Safety Modernization Act and EU Traceability Act in consultation with an internationally reputed law firm SIDLEY AUSTIN, Global Aquaculture Alliance and JIFSAN (Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition), a joint initiative of USFDA and University of Maryland.
The updated Code also added a new segment on processing plants. The other segments are Bagda & Galda hatchery, Bagda & Galda farm, shrimp collection centers/ depots, ice plants, fishing boats & vessels and shrimp/ fish carrier transport van.
