Egypt is the largest producer of farmed fish in Africa and the Middle East. Annual production in Egypt is estimated at one million tonnes per year, the equivalent of one fish per person per week for 85 million Egyptians.
“Although the aquaculture sector already provides significant benefits for the Egyptian people including jobs, economic activity and food security, there are many issues which need to be streamlined to allow sustainable expansion. The aim of the innovation platform is to ensure that stakeholders contribute towards this streamlining process going forwards,” notes Malcolm Dickson, Senior Scientist, WorldFish.
The innovation platform was developed by WorldFish, in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), as part of the CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish.
This research programme aims to increase the productivity of small-scale livestock and fish systems in sustainable ways, making meat, milk and fish more available and affordable to poor consumers across the developing world.
