Aquaculture Department Takes Shape in Philippines

Politics

PHILIPPINES - Since the Philippines is an archipelagic nation whose waters and seas are triple the area of its land mass, Speaker ProsperoNograles said yesterday national development could be hastened and sustained by securing the country's fishery and aquatic resources.

“We cannot underestimate our country's fisheries and aquatic productivity potentials,” Nograles said as he endorsed the on-going efforts by the House committee on government reorganization and committee on fisheries and aquatic resources to finalize a draft bill establishing the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR).

According to the MindanoExaminer, lawmakers led by Rep. Diosdado Macapagal-Arroyo, Luis Villafuerte, Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and Marcelino Teodoro have proposed in separate bills the creation of said department as a significant step to ensure the preservation and proper development of the nation's archipelagic waters and marine resources.
