Vietnam seafood industry strategy focuses on high-value exports

VIETNAM - Vietnams fisheries exports will begin to focus on high-value rather than raw products under a long-term strategy for the sector approved by the government.

It targets annual exports to increase by 9 percent to between US$4 and 4.5 billion by 2010.

The plan calls on the processing industry to catch up with developed economies in terms of technologies to enable seafood to remain a major hard-currency earner.

Another key measure is to restructure production, focusing on large-scale aquaculture and setting up closer links between farmers, scientists, and regulators to ensure economies of scale, quality control, and hygiene.
