South Africa Gets to Grips with Aquaculture

SOUTH AFRICA - South Africa is slowly starting to invest in the fishing industry with many new developments focused in the Eastern Cape.

The Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) in the Eastern Cape already has two large aquaculture investments. One is set to become one of the province’s largest private employers.

According to DispatchOnline, fish stocks are on the wane worldwide and fish farming is the only answer to satisfying the ever-growing demand.

The Coega IDZ’s prawn farm is still in its pilot phase but already exports large amounts of the tasty shellfish overseas.

Aquaculture has emerged as a boom industry internationally.

This has resulted in 47% of the world’s table fish being farmed, but South Africa has lagged behind.
