While welcoming the bill, The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation calls on parliament to make absolutely certain that the legislation supports and protects a sustainably productive marine environment, for the good of us all.

SFF chief executive Bertie Armstrong comments: “The Scottish fishing industry is fully committed to sustainable harvesting of the wonderful natural products in the seas around us and industry innovation is seen as taking the European lead in such matters as more selective fishing gear, real-time closure of maritime areas to protect stocks and international accreditation of our fisheries.
“The Scottish Marine Bill must champion these efforts and ensure that the ecological balance which we all seek recognises the benefits of local food production, for now and into the future.”
Sounding a note of caution, he adds: “Fish know no borders; the Scottish Marine Bill cannot cover all the requirements of the UK industry (of which we are the greater part). Proper engagement with Westminster, to ensure coordination with the UK Marine Bill in overall strategy and in matters not devolved, such as Marine Nature Conservation beyond 12 miles from the coast, will be essential.”
