SAGARPA Promotes Sustainable Crab Fishery

MEXICO - The National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA) is promoting the sustainable use of crab in Sinaloa and Sonora, through the implementation of a management plan for the fishery that generates more than 20,000 jobs.

The management plan, which includes the point of view of producers, includes monitoring and evaluation activities of the conditions in which the species is found, and their levels of abundance.

The collection and systematization of data on this fishery, gears and manuals and developing post-harvest practices were also considered.

With this tool, improved berthing infrastructure for landing crab will be promoted and fishermen will be trained in health and safety.

Overall, the management plan should help enable greater market competitiveness.
