This new reef will translate into more seafood on your plate.
With the help of local seafood businesses and government grants, the Division of Aquaculture dumped tons of oyster shells to help enhance underwater life in the area.
Officials say these reefs are just one way to help our underwater environment. Its hoped the shells will promote new oysters growing in the area waters.
"We're creating a living reef. With the vertical relief that oyster shell provide once they hit the bottom. You've got shrimp, crabs etcetera. All of these growing in the reef environment."
The Florida Department of Agriculture plans to build another reef in the area in the next six months.
Reef Construction Begins
US - The Florida Department of Agriculture helped Mother Nature out Wednesday by dumping a big pile of oyster shells into West Bay. Its part of a project to help create an oyster reef.
