New measures to protect wild salmon

NORWAY - The Norwegian Parliament (Storting) has voted to protect 29 fjords and 52 rivers and watercourses by turning them into national sanctuaries for wild salmon.

The Norwegian wild salmon is threatened by influx of salmon escaped from fish farms along the Norwegian coast.

It will be forbidden to establish fish farms in the fjords that have now been declared salmon sanctuaries. In some cases it also means that existing fish farms will have to be closed down.
