Marlborough Considers Easing Fish Farm Rules

Environment Economics Politics +3 more

NEW ZEALAND - A proposal to change the plan managing resources in the Marlborough Sounds would reduce the risk to investors aiming to set up new marine farms, supporters say.

According to the Marlborough Express, marine farming industry representatives have welcomed the proposal, but one environmentalist is worried it would make it too easy to set up new marine farms in the Sounds and could affect tourism.

The news agency reports that New Zealand King Salmon has asked the Marlborough District Council to alter the Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Act.

The council is considering adopting the company's proposal in both the Marlborough Sounds and Wairau-Awatere plans to ensure uniformity across the region and is now seeking public submissions on the idea.
