According to ABC Rural, the industry has been touted as a possible alternative for those who can't make a living from horticulture, and has received widspread support from bodies like the Department of Primary Industries.
But Barry Avery, a wine grape grower from Robinvale near Mildura, says it simply doesn't work...
"Up to this date, we've invested probably $250,000," he says.
"We may get a small amount of that money back, but at this stage I can't see that we can make this a viable part of our farming operation."
