In the first phase of this project, INAPESCA planted 245,000 postlarvae in circular cages located in Laguna de Barra de Navidad, Jalisco.
The growing season in this project was three months, during which the organisms reached an average weight of between 8.44 and 12.68 grams achieving a first crop of 1.2 tonnes of crustacean.
During the development of this project, INAPESCA specialists gave technical assistance in monitoring the fattening of this species, which included constant monitoring of weight and height, assessment of physicochemical parameters (oxygen levels, temperature , salinity and suspended solids), feeding rate fixing, cleaning and sanitation practices associated fauna (such as crab, snapper and mackerel, among others).
The information derived from this project will be useful for future development of shrimp mariculture work, as it will identify the advantages of growing in different operational and environmental conditions.
The culture of white shrimp (P. vannamei) under cage systems represents a business opportunity for coastal fishermen.
