Illegal Cockle Harvesters Successfully Prosecuted

WALES, UK - The Welsh Assembly Government successfully prosecuted two men from Burry Port on Tuesday 8 March 2011 at Ammanford Magistrates Court, for illegally harvesting cockles.

The two men were both found guilty of numerous offences committed at Llansteffan on the 19 May 2010.

Both men were fined £5000 each for gathering cockles during the hours of darkness, £15 each victim surcharge and £1840 each for costs. They were also fined £2000 each for obstructing a Marine Enforcement Officer.

In addition to the above fines one of the men was also fined £5000 for driving an unauthorised vehicle on the Three Rivers.

Both men had previously pleaded not guilty and evidence was heard in their absence as they failed to attend court.
