Hervey Bay Fish Farm Potential Highlighted
AUSTRALIA - The fish farming industry says the Hervey Bay region could potentially make hundreds of millions of dollars from the sector, but it is being held back by negative public perceptions.
Bruce Sambell from the Queensland Aquaculture Industry Federation says the sector is heavily regulated and must meet tough environmental standards.
He says the south-east coastline is ideally placed to develop aquaculture businesses.
"This is the warmest part of the southern part because it's the northern most part of the southern part before you hit the reef and you've got the right infrastructure here, particularly with the large airlines now flying out of Hervey Bay. It's potential, yes, hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars," he said.
