Hawaii scientists to study offshore aquaculture

HAWAII - The Oceanic Institute of Waimanalo has been awarded a National Marine Aquaculture Initiative Grant to study offshore caged fish farming.

The study by the Oceanic Institute and the University of Hawaii will look at Cates International, which grows moi in cages off the Ewa Plain on Oahu's south shore, and Kona Blue, which grows kahala under the brand name Kona Kampachi in cages off the Kona coast of the Big Island.

"This project will look at the effects of effluent generated, disease transfer between wild and cultured stocks, and will consider the future development of offshore cages," said Oceanic Institute spokeswoman Paula Bender.
