Govt Prepares $10mn Action Plan for Karachi Fish Harbour

PAKISTAN - A $10 million plan to convert Karachi's Fisheries Harbour Authority (KFHA) into a style of Sydney Fish Market, has been proposed by Pakistan's Government government. It says it will make KFHA a profitable authority.

The ministry of finance has asked the Sindh government and other stakeholders to establish a management committee for the project which is aimed at improving technology and skills transfer, management and financial control, market knowledge, design, processing and marketing.

Reports in Daily Times say that the principles of the project will be finalised shortly and an Action Plan would be drawn up at KFHA.

The model will be based on Sydney Fish market because like Karachi, it is an authentic wholesale and retail facility and widely recognised as a premier seafood centre.

The KFHA says that financial constraints and poor staffing are to blame for the authority's inefficiency, under-performance and low quality fish. The shortcomings must be addressed and changes to its management structure will be neccessary.
