Fraunhofer Foundation Comes to Chile

CHILE - European scientific research centre, the Fraunhofer Foundation, is to develop biotechnology, aquaculture, biomining and human health projects in Chile.

The organisation will carry out its projects in conjunction with the Chilean government and local universities. accordign to reports in the Santiago Times.

Chilean Economy Minister Hugo Lavados and Agriculture Minister Marigen Hornkohl visited Berlin last week and signed a memorandum with foundation officials outlining the programme and developing a tripartite agreement between the government the institute and the participating Universities.

The Chilean government has planned a US$6 million annual budget for the project, though numbers have yet to be finalized. The German Foundation has 88 centers worldwide, and is famed for, among others things, inventing the MP3 file, teh Santiago Times said.
