Fish is an important part of the economy and diet for local people. With a dramatic decline in catches, more fishermen are now turning to aquaculture.
Another fish farm is now being built close to Moundop fish farm in Maraye, reports SeedDaily.
"We're establishing the largest fish farming site in Senegal, on 25 hectares (62 acres), for 50 private developers to start production in July," Abdoulaye Ngom, the local head of the National Agency for Agricultural Integration and Development, a publicly-funded job creation project, told the newspaper.
The development of aquaculture should also help fish prices to fall as they are currently very expensive.
The production of farmed fish rose from 10 tonnes before 2008 to 321 tonnes in 2012 and the goal is to reach 10,000 tonnes in 2018.
