Fish re-exporters welcome decision on waving duty

Colombo - Sri Lanka's marine fish re-exporters welcomed the government decision to wave off import duty on re-exporting imported Marine fish.

Earlier, the government charged 2.5% import levy on marine fish varieties and each shipment had paid over 15,000 rupees as a levy.

That was a big burden on us, said a leading marine fish re-exporter based in Colombo.

At present a few fish exporters follow re-export business, but this is a seasonal business, he said.

During the month of October, Sri Lankan fish exporters receive big demand on marine fish. The exporters import marine fish verities from Yemen, Singapore, Maldives and other selected countries. Usually each exporter imports nearly four shipments per month during the season.
