Fish Farm to Produce 2,000 Tonnes

UGANDA - A new joint venture firm, SON Fish Farm, has set up a tilapia fish farm that will produce 2,000 metric tonnes of tilapia in five years for export, Patrick Blow, the chief executive officer, has said.

The venture is between Lake Harvest Aquaculture Pvt (LHAP) of Zimbabwe headed by Blow and Greenfields Uganda of Entebbe headed by Philip Borel. It is supported by Kajjansi Aquaculture Research and Development Centre.

Blow said the Jinja-based farm would start with a pilot study for 180 tonnes, which would increase to an optimum capacity of 2,000 tonnes.

The fish will be processed by Greenfields and sold to Lake Harvest International, the parent company of LHAP based in Luxembourg.
