2012 was declared 'International Year of Cooperatives' by the United Nations General Assembly. World Food Day's theme for 2012 is "Agricultural cooperatives key to feeding the world".

The Award was handed out to the presence of M. Michael George HAGE, FAO representative to Morocco, ambassadors of many countries, representatives of International Governmental Organizations and officials from the agriculture and fisheries sector in Morocco.

Merja Zerga was the only fishing cooperative to be awarded with a medal of merit. Friend of the Sea certification strongly contributed to underline the environmental commitment of the cooperative towards sustainability as well as the crucial importance of Merja Zerga as RAMSAR site.
