EU Trawler Proposals 'Unworkable' in Scotland

SCOTLAND, UK - Western Isles SNP MSP Alasdair Allan has said that the initial proposals from the EU regarding fishing quotas are totally unacceptable and could damage the West Coast prawn fishery.

In the proposals trawling would effectively be banned which would mean huge concerns about the langoustine industry in the Highlands and Islands.

Mr Allan commented: "If these proposals do not go unchallenged we would end up with a completely unworkable set of rules which fishermen here could not be asked to live with.

"I will now be meeting with fishing leaders in the islands to seek their views.

"Even allowing for the likelihood that the commission are presenting, the worst case scenario as their initial negotiating position, it is not a stance Scottish fishermen can accept. I am glad to see the Cabinet Secretary for Fisheries, Richard Lochhead MSP, making his views on these ludicrous proposals very clear to the Commission."
