EU Legislation Focus for Training Session

PHILIPPINES - The local government of General Santos City is hosting an international training on the European Union Legislation for Fishery and Aquaculture products.

Mayor Pedro B. Acharon leads the preparation for the global event that will be participated by officers of the Competent Authority (CA) from different countries and experts and key players of the Philippine Fishing Industry.

Acharon also vowed adequate support that would ensure success of the international activity and the eventual gain of the local fishing industry in General Santos City, the place being known as the Tuna Capital of the Philippines.

Region 12 Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) director Sani D. Macabalang cited the flourishing Tuna Industry in General Santos City as one of the factor why the city is selected as the venue for the international gathering. According to the BFAR12, General Santos City has a well-established and upgraded fishery and aquaculture facilities, home to six (6) Tuna Canneries, with chilling and freezing facilities, ice plants and cold storage plants, and a world-class Fishport complex that caters to the need of a growing fishery industry.

The international training set on April 22-24, 2008 is aimed at harmonizing understanding and interpretation of the Competent Authorities and the fishery sector on the legislation and requirements to meet EU standards.
