ECUADOR - During the first six months this year, the export in volume of shrimp surpassed exports from 1998, considered by the shrimp industry as a record year.

According to statistics from the National Chamber of Fisheries, between January and June of this year 152 million pounds of Ecuadorian shrimp were exported at $339.6 million US dollars, Equador Investing.

Ecuador sold 14 per cent more shrimp than during the same period in 1998, but Ecuador Investing says prices in 1998 were higher with sales of $488.2 million.

May 2008 set a record for monthly shrimp exports at 34.1 million pounds, fetching $76.9 million for shrimp.

Although volume declined in June, exports were up 15.6 per cent compared to June 2007.
