BRUNEI - Darussalam exports shrimps and prawns every year but it imports more of the same goods. Data available over the weekend at the Department of Economic Planning and Development at the Prime Minister's Office showed that Brunei suffered a deficit of $1.15 million from its overseas trading of shrimps and prawns. Brunei's shrimp and prawn exports in the January-December period of 2005 reached $4,047,767, but the value of its imports of similar products, was 28 per cent higher, reaching $5,198,086. The Brunei Times recently reported that the Brunei government under its diversification plans is boosting its aquaculture industry by providing more shrimp breeders for local farmers and expanding their pond areas with assistance by US based shrimp experts. Source: Brunei Times
