Breeding tanks enhance aquaculture education
US - Students at Herring Gut Learning Center will soon try their hand at breeding tilapia as part of their science curriculum in the aquaponics greenhouse.
The four new tanks, purchased through a grant from the Norcross Wildlife Foundation, will house breeding male and female fish and their fry, providing them with a protected environment apart from the larger system tanks.
"The breeding tanks will complement the hands-on teaching method we use at Herring Gut by allowing students to experience first hand what I teach them in the classroom about reproduction, genetics and life cycles", says Janelle Gunning, Aquaculture and Marine Educator at the center.
