Australia to Play Catch-up on Fish Farming

AUSTRALIA - Australia's aquaculture industry will have to shape up if it's to compete with the multi-million dollar investment in countries like India, China and the Middle East.

Currently one in two meals around the world is from farmed fish rather than out of the ocean, says ABC Rural.

And with the number of fish farms overseas growing at a rapid rate, Australian prawn and barramundi farmers face the strongest competition in future.

Tony McLennan, from the Gippsland Aquaculture Industry Network, says China now supplies 90 per cent of the world's farmed fish.
